The Joys of Capitalism

I would like to point out an interesting and funny fact:
When I was in the midst of finalizing 0.31, MacUpdate's site suffered an apparently horrendous server crash. I posted my AcidSearch 0.31 update to VersionTracker at approximately 4:25AM last night/this morning (I, quite curiously, find myself staying up way past my bedtime on a daily basis); I posted it to MacUpdate at just about 9:25PM tonight. Guess which has theirs up first? (You don't actually have to guess, you can just look and see for yourself). VersionTracker either is horribly backed up on posting its updates, or they somehow lost my update. I'll post it again after 24 hours have passed (probably to the minute)! This strikes me as somehow funny, or at least ironic—MacUpdate suffered a hard drive failure. They probably are having to restore proprietary (e.g. messy) PHP code on the server (some of which may not have been recently backed up), restore MySQL DBs from backups (the comments are still broken), etc., and yet they still get the update up quicker than VersionTracker, who had a 17 hour head start.

It just goes to show.

Comments

My experience has been quite the opposite.

When adding to VT, the 2 separate apps I added turned up within 6 hours or less. MU on the other hand stuffed things up for both. One of them took a second submitting a few weeks later for it to show up and the other didn't get in until version 1.1 despite being submitted the day of the 1.0 release.

Mileage varies :)

Pity cause I rarely look at VT cause I much prefer the MU layout.

I have had good and bad experiences with both as well, though on the whole MacUpdate has been a little faster. Sometimes VT is faster, sometimes it's slower. Yet on the whole I prefer MacUpdate as a site.

Some things about VT just bother me. For example, to get to the developer's site, they first take you to a confusing page that looks like it's about to download something, only to meta-refresh to the site. It's annoying and unnecessary, even to log the number of clicks on the link.

Ya that extra step really annoys me too :)
