Happy 2005!

Hello and happy new year to everyone out there. Just thought I'd post a general update.

I have been receiving a ridiculous amount of spam to the weblog lately. I personally feel that it is one thing to send spam email, but spamming people's blogs seems so utterly low and devoid of all moral principles. However, besides just deleting the multitude of posts about online casinos and cheap generic Viagra, I have started IP banning the losers. If this means that you cannot post but instead get an error and you are a legitimate poster, I sincerely apologize—but frankly I'm sick of this crap. If the IP banning proves unsuccessful, I will have to move on to more annoying methods such as a math question that you need to answer before posting. It's a sad day when I have to make it harder for legitimate users to use the site because of crappy online casinos that can't afford their own advertising.

Now that the rant is over, I'll tell you a little about my progress on the software. I have gotten a fair amount of progress on AcidSearch 0.4. The new features I have added recently (though far from the only planned ones) are a new Find As You Type "input box" which will hopefully allow for non-English keyboards, as well as a way to change the keys which flip through the next and previous results. I think even English speakers will find a use for these new features. Also, I have added another way to quickly add new search channels. There's a lot more coming, and I don't want to give it all away too quickly!

PlaintextPaste and PlaintextCopy are still being worked on. There will be a convergence of these two products and an as-of-yet undisclosed third product soon. Don't worry, the wait will be worth it, and they will still be free.

[UPDATE: I quit the pointless IP banning and instead opted to use MT-Blacklist, on a suggestion from Mark Turnauckas. It's been working fantastic. Thanks Mark!]
